Adrian’s Music Studios is changing it’s name to Adrian’s Music School. Why? Cuz, that’s what’s really going on at 5511 N. Albina in the historic Baker Building. Lindsay Clark is offering piano lessons. I am teaching private guitar lessons as well as ukulele, voice coaching, improvisation and an exciting program of group classes that bring people together to make music. Interested? Know somebody who might be interested? Pass the good word. Reach out to me. I’m happy to talk with you.

Thanks,

Nina Simone Tribute

The Adrian Martin Sextet band will play a tribute to the controversial artist/activist/pianist/singer/composer, Nina Simone on June 17th. Nina's life was full of struggle and beauty. I highly recommend the documentary on Netflix: What Happened, Miss Simone?

We pay homage to this under-recognized icon. Join us! Have you heard Nina Simone? Oh yes you have. Listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfJRX-8SXOs. Wanna here more? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-CrDT8lQZI

The band is incredible. The music is inspiring. The show is deeply moving and exciting.

The Adrian Martin Sextet: LaRhonda Steele on vocals, Mark Steele on piano), Michelle Medler on saxophones, flute and vocals, Leah Hinchcliffe on upright bass, electric bass and vocals, Mike Snyder on drums and me on guitar and vocals!

Where: The Alberta Rose, Cost: $20, When: June 17th, 8pm

Check out this recording of last year’s show at Jimmy Mak’s in Portland, OR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6geB4cOAlI

Jan. 9 - A Tribute to Nina Simone

Thanks to everyone who came to our sold out show!!!!!!!

A Tribute to Nina Simone: The Adrian Martin Sextet featuring LaRhonda Steele

Where: Artichoke Music Café

When: Jan. 9, 2016 8 p.m.

The Adrian Martin Sextet featuring LaRhonda Steele pays tribute to this pioneer of protest jazz/folk/gospel music at Artichoke Music. 3130 Hawthorne Blvd. 97214. Tickets $20. Reservations: (503) 232-8845 www.artichokemusic.org

Nina Simone was an amazing human. Her music reached out to touch the struggles that face our society then and now. Her controversial voice has been sampled by countless artists. Her life has been examined in multiple documentaries. She survived abuse and battled mental illness. She was a radical civil rights activist, a remarkable musician and a force to be reckoned with.

The Adrian Martin Sextet features the amazing LaRhonda Steele on vocals, Leah Hinchliff on bass, Mike Snyder on drums, LaRhonda’s talented husband Mark Steele on keys, Pete Petersen on baritone and tenor saxophones and Adrian Martin on guitar. This is an evening that should not be missed.

Artichoke Music is a nonprofit organization with programs that reach out to benefit our community. Help us keep up the good work by attending this show. Café Artichoke is one of the best listening rooms in Portland. Sit back, have a beverage and enjoy the experience.

Artichoke Community Music – A new session of classes begins on Monday Sept, 14 Sign up now!

Register now for all sorts of classes offered by great teachers. I’m offering these classes personally:

  • Playing by Ear

I’m excited about this new method that I’ve developed through years of private instruction. Learn songs by ear. You don’t have to rely on websites to figure out the chords to a tune. Have you noticed they are often wrong? Empower yourself. Together we will learn how chords and melodies relate to each other. It’s fun to do.

  • Intermediate Guitar

Do you know basic open chords? That’s all you need to join in on the fun. Come play with us!

  • Beginning Guitar

If you’ve never played guitar before, this is the class for you. We will be playing a song by the end of the first class.

  • Playing Well with Others

All instruments welcome. Learn to be a leader and a follower in a safe and fun group situation. Enjoy the pleasure of making music with others.

Feel free to contact me directly with any questions. I’d love to hear from you. 971-221-8328

Donations needed and happily accepted. If you have a guitar collecting dust, we can put it into the hands of a youth who is searching for something positive in his/her life. Two years ago I asked this beautiful community of music lovers for guitar donations. The response was heart-warming and exciting. We received guitars, tuners and other accessories from all over the country. We’ve sent those guitars to new homes bringing music to new musicians through Artichoke’s Community Outreach Program. That program is expanding and we could use your help. I continue to teach an afterschool program at David Douglas High School through Portland’s amazing SUN program. For the first time we are expanding our reach into the summer months. We are also starting a new program with Parrot Creek Child and Family Services. Six “at risk” boys will be bussed to Artichoke Music once a week where I will teach them in a group guitar class. There are other teachers involved in the outreach program as well. Can you help by donating an instrument? Monetary donations to Artichoke Music Community are welcome as well. Contact me or Kathi Osborne for more info.

Jan. Music 2014!

Artichoke Jazz returns!

Saturday Jan. 11, 2014 - Last year’s show was amazing and sold out. Call for reservations.

The Adrian Martin Sextet returns to the stage with cool and hot jazz from Sonny Rollins, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Les Paul, Charlie Parker, Adrian Martin and more.

Check out this amazing lineup of players:

George Colligan currently plays piano around the globe with the legendary Jack DeJohnette. He was on faculty at Julliard School of Music and now teaches at Portland State. JazzTimes raves about his stage persona and technique.

Paul Mazzio is a busy freelance trumpet player living and working in his home town of Portland, Or. Paul's professional career led to international tours with Woody Herman and Delbert McClinton. He’s played with such greats as Gino Vannelli to Tony Bennett, Larry Carlton, The Moody Blues and Natalie Cole.

Gary Hobbs became a legend in his own time as the drummer who joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra right out of college, following such class acts as Gene Krupa and Shelley Manne. At 59, with 38 years of gigging behind him, Gary is still the guy who drives beat. He’s played with Randy Brecker, Bud Shank, Anita O'Day, Glen Moore, Eddie Harris, Kurt Elling, Dave Frishberg at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Kevin Deitz plays upright bass, electric bass and cello. He’s appeared with Mose Allison, Frankie Avalon, Art Blakey, Chris Botti, Mel brown, Dave Brubeck, Herb Ellis, Sheena Easton, Fabian, Brian Wilson and Jimmy Lott.

Susan Sandel is a vocalist who has appeared in Equity theater and on television.  For the last several years she has enjoyed singing jazz in and around the Portland area and is especially honored to be having a musical ‘conversation’ this evening with such talented musicians.

Adrian Martin (that’s little ol’ me) is guitarist and the proud leader, arranger and producer of this wonderful evening of music.

Human interest story: I first saw Gary Hobbs perform in 1976 when our high school jazz band collected returnable pop bottles (remember those?) and hired the Stan Kenton Orchestra to play in the gym. I was awestruck then and can’t believe I get to share the stage all these years later.

At the Artichoke Café (where open mic nights are actually held each Thurs.) we will have full access to the stage, microphones, lights and P.A. system. There are fun open mic events all over town. This is a great opportunity to get comfortable in a safe, positive environment. We’ve got a lot of heart at Artichoke.

March Music 2013

March 23 I’ll be playing jazz at the awesome and delicious Orenco Station Grille w/ Tim Jensen on woodwinds, Kevin Deitz on bass and special guest vocalist- Susan Sandel.

March 30 I’ll be presenting a sextet at the first ever Artichoke Jazz Nite. The Artichoke Music Café is one of the best listening rooms in Portland. It’s been the home of acoustic music for decades because of the wonderful atmosphere. The good folks at Artichoke have asked me to help diversify the music presented in this historical venue. For the first time ever there will be some swinging jazz boppin’ the hallowed halls of the coolest café in town (not mention sultry ballads and exciting Latin jazz from Brazil). Wine, beer, coffee and tea are available as well as light snacks. Turn off those cell phones and turn on the groovin’ sounds.

The Adrian Martin Sextet features Mike Horsfall on Vibraphone and piano, Tim Jensen on Sax, Clarinet and Flute, Kevin Deitz on upright bass, Gene Ermell on drums and very special guest-Susan Sandal on vocals. I’ll be playing guitar and singing a couple of tunes. We will explore the gamut of America’s true art-form from Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Chick Corea and more. Featuring selections from the songbooks of Billy Holiday, Diana Krall and Frank Sinatra (we might even sneak in some Beatles). This will be great fun.

July Schedule

Hello Music Lovers,

We’re doing it again! Last November we put on an amazing tribute to Neil Young. This time we’re exploring, exploiting and exploding the acoustic side of the Fab Four. I’ve gathered my own fabulous four musicians/multi-instrumentalists to present an acoustic tribute to…Ladies and Gentlemen…The Beatles. Norwegian Wood, Blackbird (performed by the Artichoke Guitorchestra), Yesterday, Revolution and lots of other surprises are in store. You really can’t miss this one. Featured players are Kerry Hallett on drums, cello, guitar and banjo; Dori Prange on guitar and percussion; Allen Hunter (who once took the stage with Ringo and his All-Starrs) on upright bass and little ol’ me on guitar. All four of us sing (2 guys, 2 gals) in 4-part harmony. It’s wonderful and fun!

Artichoke Music is undergoing a huge change, becoming a non-profit music school. Read more on their website.

I’ll be heading back to my hometown in Ohio to play a great 4th of July party and then a public performance at The Stadium with former members of The Baked Potatoes (featuring the amazing Pete Davidson).

I’m excited to be playing a fun outdoor show at the Tualitin Farmers Market. Come enjoy it with me.

June Music 2012

Hello lovers of music,

It’s summer music time! This month has lots of variety, I hope to see you out there.

The first week of June I’m playing with three different groups in 3 towns; Sellwood, downtown Portland and Vancouver, Wa. Thursday is Gumbo Americana (a fun group featuring Greg Earl on bass and Al Martin on percussion) at Corkscrew Wine Bar (next to Saburo's Sushi House). Friday, I’ll be backing the beautiful sultry tones of Tara Williamson-Smith downtown at The Living Room Theater. Saturday I’ll be solo at Cinetopia.

I’m excited to be back at Rusty Grape Vineyards this month. Gorgeous venue, great food, fine wine, great times!

Join me at Orenco Station as trumpeter Justin Smith presents a tribute to trumpet masters Chuck Mangione and Herb Alpert. Exceptional bassist Jon Shaw and I provide the rhythm section. It’s great fun.

My monthly guitar workshop, Lead Guitar for the Rhythm Guitarist, is a blast. Drop in June 16 @ Artichoke Music

In July I’ll be playing some fun festivals and an acoustic tribute to The Beatles. Stay tuned!
